I saw this movie in Crackle channel by Xfinity and I was enjoying it because of the looks and alike of people in the 1840's, but the ending was terrible, it didn't give me the satisfaction that somehow they found water. On a final note, the ending was "Stupid"

The tree in the end meant the Indian led them to water. Not sure why that’s not obvious. But yeah the ending still stunk

Because we live close to the Columbia River in Oregon the landscape was familiar. To us it was obvious the Columbia was right over the ridge with Washington on the other side BUT even at that we felt totally cheated!!!!!!! I can’t imagine how people unfamiliar with the area felt! We hung in there and enjoyed it BUT GEE WHIZ FOLKS!!!

In reply to <a href="https://wn.calicoeng.com/2011/05/28/meeks-cutoff-a-beautifully-crafted-survival-tale-but-ending-falls-short/#comment-56432">ecchi!!!</a>.

Agreed! After watching the movie I did a bit of research. The ending was horrible. Based on actual events, it could have been so much more. The Native American did indeed lead them to water. This was an easily discovered fact.

so why leave it hanging like that?

According to the actual event, the native American Indian shows them the way to obtain water, but the movie doesn't even make an attempt to show the outcome that even suggests he directed the families in the right direction. The director could've at least made it a little clearer in the film. Missed opportunity on her part.

The movie was based own actual events in history. The story led us to a point then it "cutoff". Pun intended. The ending was a big disappointment. When I read the actual story on which the movie was based I had a clearer picture of how the story could have ended. The movie left me with no desire to watch any other movies of MS. Reichardt's.

This movie was fantastic but the "ending" was horrible. It didn't even give us enough information to speculate as to what might happen.
