West Chandler’s Sunset branch library is about to get a new look.
The library will be the site of a public meeting being held by the city of Chandler at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 16, to share details on renovations planned for the facility.
The Sunset Library serves the west Chandler area and is located at 4930 W. Ray Road. The meeting will include an overview of proposed improvements, the construction schedule and a question-and-answer period.
The planned renovations include updating carpeting, furnishings and equipment, creating a new service desk, an early literacy area and a dedicated space for teenagers.
A new computer lab will be added, and enhancements will be made to the current computer common area.
Library visitors will also be able to utilize a new community “living room” where they can relax and read while looking out at views of the adjacent Sunset Park. Public art will also be integrated into the designs through a partnership between the Library Division and the Chandler Arts Commission.
Library officials anticipate that the construction will begin during the slower winter months, so that potential disruptions to normal library operations will be minimized for customers.
Last fall, the project design contract was awarded to Durkin & Durkin Architects, and the construction bid is expected to be awarded in September.
Chandler leased the Sunset Library facility when it opened in 2000, and purchased the building a year ago. It is located in a retail shopping center just east of the northeast corner of Rural and Ray roads.
