Just three months ago, French forces chased out Islamic rebels who had seized Timbuktu and ransacked the city, including the schools, leaving students with no books or supplies.

Since 1991, when Tempe and Timbuktu became sister cities, Tempe has funded fresh water wells, medical supplies, school building and school supplies.

A fund raising event benefitting Sister Cities’ latest Timbuktu initiative, Soup for You and School Supplies for Timbuktu, will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m April 15-19 at Hackett House, 95 W. Fourth St., Tempe.

A $10 donation will be rewarded with soup in a bread bowl, plus salad, beverage and a cookie, all courtesy of Wildflower Bread Co.
