Nearly 18,000 runners dominated the streets of Phoenix, Scottsdale, and Tempe this past weekend on Jan. 14 to participate in the 15th annual Synchrony Financial Rock ‘n’ Roll Arizona Marathon and ½ Marathon.
The marathon, known for it’s live music and excitement, started at Second Street and Van Buren near the Arizona Center at 7:50 a.m. and ended at Tempe Beach Park.
The race is a big deal for thousands of people all over the state, but for residents in Tempe it holds an even greater value, as its successful outcome impacts those long after the race has ended.
This year, the race donated $8,000 to Tempe Sister Cities. With the donated funds, Tempe Sister Cities is able to send 40 of the top students, firemen, teachers, and police officers to Germany, China, or India through their exchange program. The gracious donation makes the exchange trip dream a reality for so many deserving individuals in the community.
