Rule vs exchange students draws ire

Two exchange students were denied the right to participate in May 19 graduation activities with fellow seniors at Marcos de Niza High School, according to a petition being circulated through auspices of an online organization known as iPetitions.com.

An Italian exchange student was said to have been told she could not walk, even though her parents were reportedly en route from the home country.

As of press time on May 18, 758 signatures had been obtained with a goal of 1,000, according to an iPetitions spokeswoman.

Jill Hanks, executive director of community relations for the Tempe Union High School District, noted that the policy being questioned is in place district-wide.

“Exchange students are told during their application process that they will not be able to walk with other graduates during end-of the-year ceremonies,” said Hanks.

“These students sign a statement that they understand the district policy, and acknowledge that they accept it.”
