Corona del Sol High School held its annual bonfire event Nov. 4, collecting more than 7,000 pounds of canned food for the St. Vincent de Paul Charity of Phoenix.
“It’s been a tradition we’ve been doing for many years,” said Ben Forbes, student council sponsor at Corona.
“The council holds a big carnival, with the main event being a bonfire made from a three-story stack of wood.”
Corona students spent the evening riding coasters and eating baked goods from families.
Attending students either donated 10 cans of food, or paid $10, for admission. Emphasis was particularly placed on donated canned food, Forbes said.
“We had about 1,000 people show up for the carnival,” he said.
St. Vincent de Paul, a charity in Phoenix designed to aid in helping the homeless, poor and disenfranchised in various areas around the world, collected the canned goods from Corona to distribute to the needy.
