Paloma girl’s artwork honored in city’s environmental art competition

Ruby Trella, a fourth grader at Kyrene de la Paloma Elementary Schbool, and her teacher have been honored by the Chandler City Council for Ruby’s winning artwork in the city’s 2013 Environmental Art Contest, according to Kyrene Governing Board member Michelle Hirsch.
Out of 700 entries, Ruby’s was one of 19 selected by the judges and the only Kyrene student to win this year. Her artwork will be displayed on calendars, posters and other promotions for the city of Chandler.
Mayor Jay Tibshraeny and Councilwoman Nora Ellen presented Ruby and her teacher, Cheryl Foster, with certificates.
It is the 10th anniversary of Chandler’s Environmental Art contest, and Hirsch’s daughter, Preslie Hirsch, along with another former Kyrene student, Rachel Gur-Arie, both now sophmores at ASU, were among the contest winners in the contest’s first year. They also were recognized at the event and helped present awards to the students.
