West Chandler HOAs report savings from water conservation effort

A Kyrene Corridor homeowners association saved more than $3,400 and 1.4 million gallons of water last year by installing a “smart” irrigation controller and low water use landscaping under a city water conservation program.
The Park Promenade HOA on the southwest corner of Ray Road and McClintock Drive converted 4,500 square feet of grass to low water use landscaping and installed a smart controller, saving $3,432 in 2008.
In all, 12 Chandler HOAs have taken advantage of rebate programs offering cash incentives to convert turfed areas or install high-tech irrigation controllers.
In addition to Park Promenade, other west Chandler HOAs participating in the rebate programs are Carrillo Ranch, Chandler Crossing and Warner Ranch Phase III and Warner Ranch IV neighborhood associations.
Chandler offers HOAs rebates of $200 for installing the irrigation controllers and up to $3,000 for replacing turf with low-water use landscape. The rebate program is intended to reduce the amount of potable water being used by HOAs for irrigation.
The weather-based controllers can improve water efficiency by up to 30 percent by using plant water requirements, weather data, and site information to automatically adjust watering times and frequency.
