The Aztecs started the year with a strong group of seniors and dominated their competition the second half of the season to culminate in their championship win at the Division I State Wrestling Tournament in Prescott Valley.

Corona’s 2016 6A state championship volleyball team was honored for being named to the MaxPreps Tour of Champions at halftime during the home boys basketball game at the end of January.

Corona's girls soccer team, with a current 11-5 record, has won six out of the last seven matches and appears to have a good chance to improve on its No. 9 ranking, with three games left in the regular season.

Corona boys soccer team, currently ranked No. 3 nationally and No. 1 in the state, according to MaxPreps.com, with 14 returning players, 10 of them starters from last season, has a chance to be as good or better than the Aztec team that won the Arizona Division I state championship in 2010.

Corona’s girls volleyball team, feeling confident after defeating Xavier in a five-set thriller in the semifinals, easily defeated Mountain Pointe in straight sets, 25-13, 25-21, 25-15, in the finals earlier this month to win the 2016 Division 6A State Championship for the first time since 1991.

The Aztecs started their first possession against Desert Ridge on Oct. 7 with a kickoff return by Brandon Gavel to the Aztecs’ 37-yard line. The gain proved fruitless when they were unable to capitalize on this good field position to sustain a drive or score a point until the third quarter.

Corona’s girls volleyball team, at the Westwood Tournament of Champions on Sept. 17, went undefeated in eight matches, losing only two sets in the process, to play against the state’s No. 1 ranked team the championship finals.

The Aztecs started the season in the same manner as they did in 2013 when they went on to take home the state championship trophy by winning their first meet, with two of their senior runners, Nate Rodriguez and Ryan Normand, crossing the finish line one-two at the Chandler Cross Country Invitational.
