The Marcos de Niza family of students, alumni, teachers, staff and fans—in addition to a whole lot of people from Tempe and surrounding areas—can be proud of Marcos alum and new Olympian Sam Dorman, who recently won a silver medal with his diving partner, Mike Hixon, in the men’s synchronized 3-meter springboard diving competition during the 2016 Olympic games in Rio.
Wrestlers, like most high school athletes, use their summer vacation from school to sharpen their skills against the best competition they can find to further their specific athletic development in preparation for the high school season.
The Aztecs ended the season ranked No. 10 in the state after making it into the DI state volleyball championship tournament as the No. 6 seed on May 7. Corona eventually lost to the Mesa Jackrabbits in the first round 3-1 but finished the season 22-11-1 and 6-1.
Alex Lawson, a 2012 Corona graduate and two-time Arizona state Division I tennis champion in both single and doubles, has been selected as an All-American for his performances this season playing for the University of Notre Dame by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association on June 4.
Corona's track team had the most state qualifiers in the school’s history at the AIA Division I State Championships held May 4 and 7 at Mesa Community College, at which the girls team finished fifth and the boys team sixth out of 38 DI teams.
